Poland officially became the 28th member state of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Sept. 25. IEA membership will enable Poland to receive help from other member states in the event of disruptions in the supply of oil. The IEA emergency response mechanism is based on providing states facing oil supply disruptions with some of the reserves held by other member states whose oil supplies are not disrupted.

To meet the requirements of IEA membership, Poland has introduced legal instruments to ensure emergency oil stocks equivalent to at least 90 days of imports. Poland has also developed instruments enabling a reduction in oil consumption in the case of an oil supply crisis. The IEA was founded during the oil crisis of 1974. It is based in Paris and operates as part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
