Janda Takes Boska! to National Opera
October 22, 2008
Article's tools:

Warsaw's first private theater, Krystyna Janda's Teatr Polonia, turns three this fall and the company is putting on its hit Boska! at the National Opera Oct. 27 to mark the occasion.

Boska!, a Polish version of British playwright Peter Quilter's 2005 play Glorious!, is based on the life of Florence Foster Jenkins (1868-1944), an American soprano famous for having no singing ability whatsoever. But a sense of personal greatness and the wherewithal to hire New York's most prestigious venues helped make Jenkins a favorite among musical cognoscenti for more than 30 years.

Janda leads a stellar cast that includes Maciej Stuhr, Wiktor Zborowski, Anna Iberszer, Krystyna Tkacz, and Ewa Telega.

Janda, one of Poland's greatest stage and screen actresses, best known internationally for her roles in films like Man of Marble, Man of Iron, The Interrogation, and My Mother's Lovers is an accomplished singer whose musicianship is in no way typified by her atonal, arrhythmic offerings in Boska!

The Polonia's birthday celebrations will be continuing right through October with several other shows and concerts. Visit wwwteatrpolonia.pl for more details.

Oct. 27, Wielki Theater/National Opera, 1 Teatralny Sq., 8 p.m.; tickets zl.60-zl.150, available from the Polonia Theater box office at 56 Marszałkowska St., www.ebilet.pl
