Former finance minister and ex-governor of Poland's central bank Leszek Balcerowicz will be part of a special think tank of economists who will advise the European Commission on how to prevent another global financial crisis in the future. Commission chief José Manuel Barroso Oct. 21 announced that the group of experts would be chaired by Jacques de Larosiere, a former managing director of the International Monetary Fund. The think tank has eight members.

According to Barroso, the group will search for the best way to strengthen supervision of cross-border financial institutions so as to prevent financial crises like the current one. The experts are expected to unveil their first proposals in time for the spring EU summit in March. Balcerowicz is the only panel member from the new EU member states. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk put forward his name at the EU summit in Brussels in October.
