Celebrating Independence

Independence Day on Nov. 11 is the most important public holiday in Poland. To mark the 90th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence, Warsaw is hosting the Przystanek Niepodległość (Destination independence) series of events organized by the Polish History Museum.

Nov. 11 marks the day Poland regained independence in 1918, after 123 years of partition between foreign powers. The third partition in 1795 sealed the annexation of Poland by Russia, Prussia and Austria.

Destination Independence events:
- Nov. 11, noon-4 p.m.
Street game: Looking for the diamond, or an expedition into interwar Warsaw

An interactive detective puzzle set in prewar Warsaw for children and adults

- 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Trip by historical tram along the route Narutowicza Square-National Museum-Rondo Waszyngtona traffic circle-Dworzec Wileński railway station-Old Town-Narutowicza Square

- Demonstration of vintage vehicles from interwar Poland. Krakowskie Przedmieście Street near St. Anne's Church

- 7 p.m.-10 p.m., Opening of the Dwudziestolecie. Oblicza nowoczesności (Two Decades. Images of Modernity) exhibition in the Royal Castle, dedicated to the interwar Second Republic of Poland. Open until Feb. 10, 2009.

- 7 p.m., Concert by Leszek Możdżer, Lars Danielsson and Zohar Fresco performing a special program for the 90th anniversary of Poland regaining independence. Krakowskie Przedmieście Street, near St. Anne's Church.

Admission to all events is free.
