The HISTORY of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań dates back to the beginnings of the 17th century when, upon the decision of King Sigismund III Vasa, the Jesuit College was transformed into an institution of higher learning and granted university status. The festive inauguration of the first academic year at our University in the reborn Poland took place on May 7th 1919. The Poznań University, one of the biggest research and teaching centres in Poland, was granted the name Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in 1955.
TODAY ADAM MICKIEWICZ UNIVERSITY (AMU) has an academic community of 60,000 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students, academic tutors, research-technical and library staff, as well as administrative employees. In the last decade the AMU has always been ranked among top-three Universities in Poland according to the influential Wprost weekly magazine.

Our 14 faculties are: Biology, Chemistry, Polish and Classical Philology, Physics, Geographical and Geological Sciences, History, Mathematics and Computer Science, Political Science and Journalism, Social Sciences, Educational Studies, Modern Languages and Literature, Law and Administration, Theology, Pedagogy and Fine Arts in Kalisz.
We offer 145 areas of study, some of them unique e.g. Cognitive Science, Acoustics (Sound Engineering major), Nanotechnology (Material Engineering major), many of them new, e.g. at the Faculty of History, Eastern Studies, Balkan Studies (European AMU College in Gniezno), and at the Faculty of Modern Languages and Literature, Indonesian-Malay philology. We also offer 68 postgraduate programmes.
Collaboration of the AMU with some 190 foreign universities offers ample exchange and mobility opportunities for the teaching staff and students.
