Sputnik Returns to Warsaw

The Kinoteka cinema in the Palace of Culture and Science will host its second Sputnik over Warsaw Russian Film Festival Nov. 14-23.

The festival will be officially opened by film director Nikita Mikhalkov and Mikhail Shvydkoj and Yuri Laptiev, special cultural advisors to the Russian president. During the ceremony, Mikhalkov will be presented with a special diploma by Rados³aw Sikorski, the Polish foreign minister. In turn, the Russian foreign ministry will present a diploma to renowned Polish actor Wojciech Siemion. The evening will end with a showing of Stenka Razin, the first film in the history of Russian cinema, made in 1908.

The festival will feature more than 130 films and over 250 showings, among which will be a retrospective of Mikhalkov's work and five evenings showcasing the work of directors such as Tarkovski and Sokurov. It will also see the Polish premiere of Aleksei Balabanov's latest film, River.
