Meet Matt Bianco
November 12, 2008 By P.M.
Article's tools:

One of the stars of this autumn's Jazz Era series of concerts is Matt Bianco, a group known for collaboration with Polish-born singer Barbara Trzetrzelewska, who in the late 1980s forged a successful international career as Basia. Matt Bianco will perform Nov. 19 at the Kongresowa Hall in Warsaw.

Matt Bianco was formed in the 1980s after the demise of a jazz group named Blue Rondo a la Turk. Matt Reilly, the vocalist, composer and sound engineer of Blue Rondo a la Turk, was experimenting with jazz. Danny White, the pianist in Blue Rondo a la Turk, liked his ideas on upbeat pop-jazz. The two were soon joined by Trzetrzelewska.

Matt Bianco's 1984 single "Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed" entered hit charts across Europe and the follow-up, "Sneaking Out The Back Door," from the debut album Whose Side Are You On?, found buyers not only among fans of ambitious pop, but also among more demanding lovers of jazz. After another successful single, "Half A Minute," the band members went their separate ways. Reilly with pianist Mark Fischer continue as Matt Bianco to this day.

During the Jazz Era concert in Warsaw, Matt Bianco will give premiere performances of tracks from Really Jazzy, the latest album by Dutch trumpeter Saskia Laroo. Specializing in acid jazz, funk, hip-hop and drum'n'bass, Laroo also flirts with rock and blues. She likes to experiment with club music, feeling most at home with the trendy smooth jazz genre.
