Civic associations and German competitors of the Nord Stream consortium are protesting against construction of OPAL, a pipeline connecting the Nord Stream pipeline, which is to pump Russian natural gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea, with the German gas network, the German Der Spiegel weekly reports.

The German company E.ON Ruhrgas and the Wingas company owned by Russia's Gazprom and German BASF want to build OPAL for 1 billion euros. Competitors of the gas companies filed a complaint alleging the move would produce a cartel deal that may hit free competition.
