Composer Krzysztof Penderecki's monumental work Seven Gates of Jerusalem will be performed at the Wielki Theater-National Opera in Warsaw on Nov. 23. The concert will close the Krzysztof Penderecki Festival celebrating his 75th birthday.

Seven Gates of Jerusalem was commissioned by the city of Jerusalem to mark the 3,000 years since the city was founded. It was first played in Jerusalem in January 1997 and featured an international cast of soloists, the radio choirs of Munich, Stuttgart and Leipzig as well as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lorin Maazel. It was first performed in Poland at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw in March 1997.

The concert in the Moniuszko Auditorium will be performed by the National Opera Chorus and Orchestra and the Sinfonia Varsovia, under the direction of Penderecki himself.

The Krzysztof Penderecki Festival is organized by the Ludwig van Beethoven Association. During its three days, works by the great Polish composer will be performed at the National Philharmonic, Royal Castle and the Wielki Theater. The invited performers include the Shanghai Quartet, Arto Noras (cello), Michel Lethiec (clarinet), Konstanty Andrzej Kulka (violin), Gabor Boldoczki (trumpet).
