Every Grosz Counts
November 26, 2008
Article's tools:

Polish schools and kindergartens launched the 9th annual Góra Grosza (Pile Up the Pennies) charity initiative Nov. 24. Organized by the Nasz Dom (Our Home) Association under the auspices of the National Education Ministry, this is one of the country's biggest charity campaigns. It lasts until Dec. 5 and raises money to help children who grow up away from their biological parents. The money goes to family-run homes for children, family emergency centers, adoption families and the most needy orphanages.

During the initiative, students with the help of teachers collect small-denomination groszy coins. Last year, 10,000 schools collected 160 metric tons of such coins, worth zl.1.4 million.
