Olsztyn Mayor Czesław Małkowski, suspected of sexually abusing female colleagues, formally lost his job after city residents voted in a referendum Nov. 16 to eject him from his post.

As a commissioner to manage the city until a new mayoral election has not been appointed yet, the municipal authorities are now unable to take any binding decisions. Prime Minister Donald Tusk is expected to appoint the commissioner within a few days.

Małkowski, suspected of sexually abusing female colleagues, raping one of them, and acting to the detriment of the city, is under arrest. The Olsztyn sex scandal is one of the most notorious involving public figures in Poland. Małkowski has consistently denied the accusations and even some local Church officials have come to his defense.

In the referendum, 24,843 people voted for Małkowski to lose his post and 18,348 against. The turnout was 32.38 percent.
