The Senate has adopted a draft law on Polish citizenship under which people who have lost citizenship or renounced it will have the right to regain it. Decisions on restoring citizenship would be issued by the minister of internal affairs and administration.

The draft was submitted by Civic Platform (PO) senators. At present, Polish citizenship can be granted to people who have no citizenship, have lived in Poland for at least five years under a settlement permit or a long-term EU residence permit. PO senators would like the right to apply for Polish citizenship to be also granted to foreigners who have lived in Poland for a long time and have integrated with Polish society, can speak Polish, have a place to live and sources of income in Poland, respect Polish law and pose no threat to the country's external and internal security.

Additionally, Polish citizenship could be granted in an administrative process to foreigners for whom easier access to citizenship is recommended by the Council of Europe. They include refugees, people without citizenship and spouses and children of Polish citizens.
