President Lech Kaczyński has vetoed a law aiming to change the status of all land within city limits classed as farmland to residential.

The legal amendment was proposed by the "Friendly State" parliamentary committee.

Kaczyński cited experts who say that coupled with the inefficient system of urban planning, the law as proposed by parliament could result in devastation of valuable natural landscape, higher traffic congestion and uncontrolled construction. Kaczyński has also said that local governments disapprove of the amendment. He was asked to veto the law by the Association of Polish Urban Planners and the Polish Regional Planning Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences (KPZK PAN).
