The modern custom of celebrating the coming of the New Year dates back to the reign of Pope Sylvester II. According to Sibylline prophecy, the end of the world was nigh at the turn of the year 1000. On Dec. 31, 999, Romans and the citizens of other European cities awaited midnight with trepidation. When it turned out that the prophecy was not fulfilled, the streets became thronged with people celebrating the coming of the New Year.

It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that New Year's Eve balls, as we know them today, became popular. Initially they were held in large cities among the wealthiest residents. During the partitions of Poland, from 1795 to 1918, such celebrations were regarded as unpatriotic. New Year's Eve celebrations in Poland, like in the rest of Europe, did not take place on a large scale until after the World War I. This year Warsaw is offering a rich mix of venues, attractions and good food for New Year's Eve celebrations in hotels, restaurants and clubs.


Jan III Sobieski Hotel, 1 Zawiszy Sq.
The theme for this year's ball at the Jan III Sobieski Hotel is Black and White. Actress and singer Joanna Jabłczyńska will host the evening. Attractions include a live performance by the Vini Band and a raffle. Hotel chef Robert Sowa will prepare a buffet of cold and hot dishes and desserts. Guests will have a wide choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The hotel is offering ball guests overnight rooms at special rates: 50 euros for a single room and 68 euros for a double.

Marriott Hotel, 65/79 Jerozolimskie Ave.
The Marriott Hotel is offering a "Dawn to Dusk" New Year's Eve extravaganza in its Champions restaurant in Mexican style. DJ Edgar Gomez will entertain guests with the best of Latin dance music. Attractions include a performance by dance ensemble Pistoleros and a laser show. The ticket price includes an unlimited buffet, non-alcoholic drinks and alcoholic beverages such as Żywiec and Desperados beers and Tequila Sierra. Guests will be able to sample chicken fillet with rice and ratatouille, a spicy chili dish and tuck into Mexican hotdogs at midnight.

Sheraton Hotel, 2 Bolesława Prusa St.
Chef Artur Grajber, the culinary coordinator for the Starwood hotel chain, has designed the menu for the Sheraton Ball this year. Dishes will feature pheasant, served with a Mako onion chutney and pine-nuts, and consommé made with dried, wild mushrooms. These will be followed by a wide assortment of desserts. The D'LUX band will entertain the guests. Other attractions will include fortune telling and a huge lottery after midnight. The lottery's top prize is a weekend for two in the Imperial Hotel in Vienna.

Le Meridien Bristol, 42/44 Krakowskie Przedmieście St.
The Bristol Hotel has taken The Phantom of the Opera as its theme for this year's New Year's Eve Ball to be held in the Malinowa and Marconi restaurants. The Malinowa Restaurant is offering guests a seven-course dinner while the Marconi restaurant will have a buffet and alcohol beverages. The Kolumnowy Bar will be transformed into a ballroom. The band, Sounds Like Jazz, will alternate with DJ Wowik, Wojciech Wilczyński, to provide dance music. Attractions will include a fireworks display and lottery. Evening attire is compulsory. The Hotel Bristol is offering ball guests a Superior room for two people at a special rate of zl.370 for the night with breakfast.

The Zamojski Palace at 2 Foksal Street is the venue for three parallel events on New Year's Eve. The Ogrody Foksal Restaurant is offering a sit-down dinner to the accompaniment of piano music. The Exhibition Pavilion will host a ball, buffet and open bar. The band, 7 sekund, will perform live and feature hits from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Attractions include a competition with prizes. Cool De Sac club will have a DJ, buffet and open bar.

This year's New Year's Eve celebration at the Platinum Club will be in the style of Le Crazy Horse de Paris, the famous Parisian cabaret venue. There are three types of tickets available: zl.600 per person, including food and open bar, with a seat in the Kolumnowa Room; zl.500 per person, including food and open bar, with a seat in one of the other of the Club's rooms; zl.300 per person, including food and open bar, standing room only.

The theme for this year New Year's Eve at the Polonia Palace is a Hollywood Glamour Party. The Hotel's Strauss restaurant and Bojangles Bar are offering a menu inspired by Hollywood parties, a choice of alcoholic beverages, non-alcoholic drinks and a New Year toast. Live bands and DJs will provide the music. The hotel is offering rooms at a special rate for the night with a late check-out time. A room with breakfast will cost 95 euros for the one night.

Wielki Theater-National Opera, 1 Teatralny Sq.
The National Opera invites opera and ballet fans to a French evening on New Year's Eve. The repertoire includes scenes from operas by French composers including Georges Bizet's Carmen, Leo Delibes' Coppelia, Charles Gounod's Faust and Jacques Offenbach's Parisian Life performed by the opera's soloists, ballet and choir and the Alla Pollaca Choir to the accompaniment of the Wielki Theater Orchestra, under the baton of Gabriel Chmura. The evening, directed by Jarosław Kilian, starts at 8:30 p.m. in the Moniuszki Hall.

The Studio Buffo Restaurant is preparing a special menu for New Year's Eve. Between the restaurant and the Studio Buffo theater next door will be a heated marquee and the theater auditorium will be transformed into a dance floor with tables all around. Studio Buffo artists will sing and dance for the guests to the accompaniment of a 12-person orchestra. The performances will be shown on screens in the restaurant. The theme for this New Year's Eve at Villa Park Wesoła will be A Frozen extravaganza in the Snow Queen's Villa. The organizers invite you to a magic world of reindeer, ice sculptures and lighting effects. Ticket prices include Scandinavian food throughout the night and an open bar. Music will feature hits from the 1970s and 1980s and latest hit songs. Villa Park Wesoła is also offering a double room with a New Year's breakfast for partygoers at the special rate of zl.250 for the one night.

The AleGloria Restaurant is seeing in the New Year with a "Golden Ball under the spell of Billie Holiday," a party in an intimate atmosphere in rooms decorated with flakes of gold and candlelight. Dishes that renowned restaurateur Magda Gessler is preparing for guests on the night include blini with sandal salmon and purple caviar, tarts with foie gras, figs in Parma ham with mozzarella, Golden Bisque lobster soup, fresh halibut fish in caviar beurre blanc, Irish lamb with morel mushrooms in cognac sauce on fluffy sweet potato, and a "Walk in Seville" meringue-and-orange zabaglione layer. A wide range of drinks at the guests' disposal includes Muscadet and J.Moreau & Fils French wines, Valdemar '05 D.O.C. Rioja Martinez Bujanda Spanish wines, vodka, whisky, gin, Baileys, Campari and Martini, as well as soft drinks.
