Eight Polish companies and local government institutions won plaudits in a European energy conservation competition held between Sept. 1, 2007 and Aug. 31, 2008. The competition, known as the 2nd Energy Trophy, aimed to promote energy savings in office buildings.

The Polish contestants were BOT Elektrownia Bełchatów and BOT Elektrownia Opole power plants; RWE Polska power distribution company; the county administration offices in Konin and Wołomin; and the town halls in Zakopane, Jarocin and Jaworzno.

In all, the 2nd Energy Trophy attracted 155 companies, public administration authorities and universities in 17 European Union countries. The competition was held as part of the Intelligent Energy-A Program for Europe project.

An international jury of energy and climate experts selected the competition winners in November 2008.

The Konin County Office and RWE Polska excelled in terms of efficient energy consumption, and RWE Polska additionally came in second internationally in the public awareness campaign category.
The Konin County Office claimed first place nationwide in energy savings, ahead of BOT Elektrownia Opole and RWE Polska.

The winners will collect their Energy Trophies at the European Prize Gala, an event that will be held Feb. 12 as part of the European Sustainable Energy Week.
