309 million cell phones were sold worldwide in the third quarter of 2008, according to market research company Gartner.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., owner of the Sheraton brand, is working with real-estate sector company Europejski Fundusz Hipoteczny SA on a project to build the Sheraton Mazury Lakes Resort hotel near the town of Miko³ajki in the Mazuria Lake District in northeastern Poland.

The new facility will strengthen the presence of the Sheraton brand in Poland, which is one of the fastest expanding markets in Central and Eastern Europe, according to Roeland Vos, president of Starwood Hotels & Resorts' Europe, Africa and the Middle East division.

The Sheraton Mazury Lakes Resort will offer 274 rooms, including 17 luxury suites. It will also have two restaurants, a coffee bar, a wine cellar, and a bar & cigar lounge. It will also provide more than 2,200 square meters of conference space, a large fitness room, a swimming pool, and a spa complex providing a wide range of beauty and relaxation treatments. The hotel will be located at the heart of the Mazuria Lake District, along Poland's longest sailing route.

The project will begin on April 1, 2009, with the official opening scheduled for April 29, 2011, Vos said. Under a contract signed in December, the hotel will be managed by Starwood Hotels & Resorts, while its owner will be Europejski Fundusz Hipoteczny, a company that provides funding for investment projects and carries out its own projects in the real estate sector. Europejski Fundusz Hipoteczny specializes in three-, four- and five-star hotel projects complete with conference and training centers as well as spa facilities.

The Sheraton Mazury Lakes Resort will be the fifth hotel to operate in Poland under the Sheraton brand, and the seventh hotel to be run by the Starwood chain in this country.
