In the first symphony concert this year, the National Philharmonic symphony orchestra will play with Brazilian cellist Antonio Meneses Jan. 9 and 10. The orchestra will be conducted by John Neschling, also from Brazil.

The program features compositions by Hector Villa-Lobos and Pyotr Tchaikovsky as well as variations by Max Reger, including a theme from Mozart's Piano Sonata in A Major.

An acclaimed soloist and chamber musician, Meneses is the first prize and gold medal winner of the Pyotr Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982. He plays in the famous Beaux Arts Trio. His countryman Neschling works with the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo.
