It Can Only Be Boy George
January 7, 2009 By P.M.
Article's tools:

Best known for his hit "Karma Chameleon" with Culture Club and his convention-breaking transgender costumes of the 1980s, Boy George will play at the Capitol club in Warsaw Jan. 10.

When the video for Culture Club's Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? first aired in the United States, viewers were not surprised by the song itself. But the then 20-year-old George Alan O'Dowd, who appeared dressed in a skirt and wearing extravagant makeup, was another matter entirely. Before he became something of a gay icon, Boy George used to reply to questions about his sexual preferences with the quip "Oh no, I much prefer a cup of tea to sex." To this day, Boy George has kept his make-up and admits that he "looks more magical with a painted face."

After four successful albums with Culture Club, Boy George embarked on a solo career with 1987's Sold and although he released several more albums under varying names, he never quite recaptured the success of his Culture Club days. However, he did successfully branch out into club music, deejaying and composing, scoring several underground club hits as well as reaching the charts with the title song to Neil Jordan's film The Crying Game in 1992. He also composed the music for Taboo, a musical based on his own life, which premiered in London's West End in 2002 in a charity performance hosted by Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor, before being staged on Broadway. This led to Boy George receiving the prestigious Tony Award for Best Original Score in 2004.
