The Business Centre Club (BCC), an organization that brings together Polish employers, handed out awards to some of the country's best companies in Warsaw Jan. 10.

The Grand Gala ending the BCC's 18th Polish Business Leader competition was held at the Wielki Theater/National Opera. During the gala, nominations for the Polish Business Leader title were announced, and the winners received Gold Statuettes.

Former President Lech Wałęsa received the BCC Special Award Gold Statuette for his contribution to the political and economic changes that have led to the emergence of a market economy in Poland, along with the development of entrepreneurship and economic growth.

The annual BCC Special Awards go to outstanding individuals from outside the business community for their contribution to the development of entrepreneurship and the market economy in Poland. Previous recipients included former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, former U.S. President George Bush Sr., ex-French President Jacques Chirac, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and ex-Polish Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki.

Social Solidarity Medals were also presented during the gala. These are awards for individuals committed to social initiatives who help the needy, promote the idea of corporate social responsibility, and build social solidarity. The award committee, headed by Bishop Piotr Jarecki, granted the medals to former boxing champion Dariusz Michalczewski for running a foundation that promotes sports among children and young people, and to entrepreneur Jędrzej Wittchen for helping a secondary school and a girls' dormitory at the Center for the Blind in Laski near Warsaw.

The BCC has awarded its Polish Business Leader Gold Statuettes to companies and their bosses since 1991. Those eligible to take part in the competition are BCC members regardless of their company's production profile, services offered and ownership structure, as long as they have not received the award before.
