Polkomtel, the operator of the Plus mobile network, has been named by consultants Audytel as the best provider of mobile internet services in Poland.

Mobile internet can efficiently supplement, or sometimes even replace, fixed internet access. The revolution initiated more than a decade ago in Poland by the intensive growth of mobile telephone networks is now extending to mobile internet access. Tests last December by Audytel, a company specializing in data communication auditing, in 22 Polish cities are revealing. GSM/UMTS, a mobile data transfer technology used by most providers, is as comfortable for internet access as its fixed counterpart.

Mobile internet is an attractive alternative to fixed lines, especially in terms of ease of access, mobility and range. But lately also in terms of transfer speed and costs. Over 2,500 measurements were made in 107 different locations and using four different GSM/UMTS providers (P4, Polkomtel, PTC, PTK Centertel) with Polkomtel coming first overall. As pointed out in the test report, Polkomtel's services came first in connection stability tests as well as achieving the highest download speeds at over 5.5 Mbit/s. PTK Centertel came a close second and PTC and P4 achieved "satisfactory" results in some locations, according to Audytel.

The final total of each operator, out of a possible maximum of 100 points, was the sum of results in tests on data upload and download speeds, delays and stability. Polkomtel achieved the highest score at 95.7, with PTK Centertel trailing slightly on 93.7. PTC scored 76.3 and P4 came last with 72.4. Polkomtel achieved maximum scores for data download and stability. On the other hand PTK Centertel fared best in delays and was close to the maximum for download speed as well. The best score for data upload went to P4.
