Poland is an attractive country for foreign professionals, but settling here requires professional help as well. Without it you may encounter some difficulties.

Although the number of automobiles in Poland has increased 10 times since the fall of communism, under Polish regulations a car is still considered a luxury. Bringing a car to Poland requires customs clearance. At conditional customs clearance, duty is counted from value. So, at the border, do not present a purchase invoice from several years ago, as then they will count your duty on the price of a new car. If your car is stolen or wrecked, an insurance firm will reimburse the real value, while the duty you will have to pay will be as for a new car.

Do not skimp on insurance and do not leave any valuables or documents in your car. Until recently license plates for foreigners temporarily residing in Poland were easily identifiable, drawing thieves' attention.

After numerous requests from many diplomatic corps, they now are the same as regular registrations. Going around Poland as an expat, you must have a Polish driver's license. If your country has no agreement with Poland on an automatic exchange of driver's licenses, you will have to take an exam obviously, in Polish. Even if you have been a driver for three decades, the examination board will treat you like a beginner. Fortunately, it is possible to take the exam with the help of a translator, so practically the latter will answer the questions for you. Therefore, it is worth knowing who to turn to. Do not disregard this. If you do not change your driver's license for a Polish one, the insurer might refuse you indemnity in case of a collision and on Polish roads collisions occur more frequently than in your country.
