Focus on Cinematographer
February 18, 2009 By Dariusz Pietrzak
Article's tools:

Poznań's Stary Browar Gallery is hosting an exhibition of works by Academy Award winning Polish filmmaker Zbigniew Rybczyński, who is also an internationally recognized expert in digital cinematography and a pioneer in HDTV technology.

Rybczyński was born in ŁódĽ, Poland, in 1949. He studied cinematography in the local film school and began his professional career working as a cinematographer for young directors of his generation.

He won an Oscar for his Animated Short film Tango in 1983. In the United States he made music videos for artists such as Mick Jagger, Simple Minds and John Lennon.

The video for Lennon's "Imagine" is continuously shown during the Poznań exhibition, which also features a wealth of electronic images as well as sketches, drawings, calculations and technical drawings by Rybczyński.

If not for the constant flickering of images on the surrounding monitors, you could imagine yourself in a technical museum. The documentation on show illustrates how an artist fascinated by digital images can strive to translate his imagination through the use of technology.

Rybczyński got interested early in the possibilities of high-definition television. His work combines formal experimentation with an imagination imbued with humor. When creating his moving images, the artist makes use of all the possibilities offered by digital television and electronic image manipulation.

Poznań, Stary Browar Gallery, 42 Półwiejska St., until Feb. 22
