The Seventh Witold Lutosławski International Cello Competition is being held in Warsaw Feb. 19-26. The competition is run by the Foundation for the Promotion of Young Cellists and named after Polish musician Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994), one of the greatest European composers of the 20th century.

Contestants can expect to have their artistic creativity and technical ability tested to the max. During the first two rounds, they will have to play major cello works from the Baroque up until the present. The second round is dedicated to the 19th and 20th centuries. The third round is dedicated to Lutosławski cello compositions. This final round offers up-and-coming cellists a rare opportunity to play the composer's Cello Concerto with a full orchestra.

The competition will be judged by an international panel of outstanding musicians chaired by Kazimierz Kord and which includes Andrzej Bauer, Julius Berger (Germany), Karine Georgian (Britain), Reinhard Latzko (Austria), Kazimierz Michalik (Poland), Tomasz Strahl (Poland), Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi (Japan) (pictured) and Daniel Veis (Czech Republic).

The Witold Lutosławski International Cello Competition has been held every two years since 1997 and is Europe's only cello competition open only to musicians aged up to 24. The competition has been a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions since February 2000 and the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth since December 2000.
