Rock & Roll Dance Contest

Warsaw's Stodoła student club is hosting the 29th Bill Haley Rock'n'Roll Dance Competition Feb. 23.

The event's beginnings date back to 1981 when the father of rock'n'roll died in the United States on Feb. 9 at the age of 55. Haley's greatest hit, "Rock Around the Clock," sold 22 million copies and kicked off a global rock'n'roll craze. To honor the musician after his death, Stodoła launched a dance competition named after Haley.

Since then, hundreds of Polish and foreign dancers have taken part in the competition every year, showing off their skills before a panel of judges who have included many Polish show business celebrities.

The main rule is for all the contestants to actively dance rock'n'roll for 60 minutes. The last 10 minutes is the final proper. The couples cannot rest and the best one is chosen by a jury composed of media personalities. The prize goes to the couple the judges consider to have performed the best and most stylish rock'n'roll.

All couples interested in participating in the contest are asked to register in advance by email: stodola@stodola.pl or fax 22 825 86 46.

Feb. 23, 6 p.m., Stodoła, 10 Batorego St., tickets: zl.30/35, www.stodola.com.pl
