Article's tools:

Maturing is painful. Poland has for the first time been targeted by a brutal act of terrorism aimed directly at one of its citizens. A Polish citizen has been kidnapped and murdered by an organization alien to us, for unknown reasons and an unknown purpose. The slain man was a civilian who was not involved in any war and took nobody's side. He was caught on the frontline by accident, carrying out his civilian professional duties and in no way posing a threat to those who killed him.

Poland is a participant in the war on terror. Together with many other countries, it decided to challenge the threat that reared its ugly head during the bloody attack on America on 9/11. Polish soldiers are taking part in the war on a voluntary basis mandated by a government decision. Some of them have found themselves in the line of fire.

Under laws adopted by the international community, civilians should not be targets. Under the law of the terrorists, they may and even should be attacked. They are a good target-poorly defended and valuable.

We hoped the Polish engineer could be saved. But it was a futile hope. Neither the Polish nor Pakistani authorities managed to help him.

Our compatriot is not the first casualty and certainly not the last as long as terrorists continue to achieve their objectives. The ruthless logic of the terrorists has seen us join an unenviable club-one that many other countries and nations joined before us.
