Could rapid adoption of the euro by Poland prove a recipe for counteracting the global financial crisis? According to the government, the single European currency in stores and in citizens' pockets would shield Poland from the many problems linked to the crisis. Thus Prime Minister Donald Tusk's Cabinet is sticking to plans to adopt the euro in 2012, or maybe one year later. But for this to happen it is necessary to change the constitution and that is not possible without support from the opposition and the president. But Lech Kaczyński is skeptical about the advantages of entering the euro zone. So is his twin brother, Jarosław, the leader of the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party.

Paweł Piskorski is a politician who has seen his star rise and fall. He was once, at the age of 28, the youngest advisor to the prime minister. Later he became Warsaw's controversial mayor and then one of the founders of the mighty Civic Platform (PO) party, from which, however, he was first sent out to the European Parliament and then ousted altogether for his alleged part in a financial scandal. It has long been obvious that the ambitious Piskorski, 41, wants to return to the political battlefield in Poland. And so it happened. He garnered 99 of 103 votes to be elected leader of the Democratic Party (SD), an almost forgotten grouping but one that has, according to many, the potential to lure away some of the voters at the moment loyal to parties with seats in parliament, especially voters who have been backing the PO.
