Chamber of Commerce Gives Out Awards

The Polish Chamber of Commerce (KIG) Feb. 12 held a Business Self-government Gala event to hand out awards to outstanding entrepreneurs and journalists as well as business and political leaders.

The chamber granted Golden Umbrella awards to former Polish president Lech Wałęsa and former deputy prime minister and ex-central bank chief Prof. Leszek Balcerowicz, for their "determination to lead Poland onto the road towards a free market." KIG head Andrzej Arendarski called Wałęsa and Balcerowicz "the icons of free-market transition in Poland."

The following individuals received Silver Umbrella awards in recognition of their contribution to the growth of the Polish economy: Maciej Witucki, CEO of Telekomunikacja Polska; Adam Góral, president of Asseco Poland; Ryszard Florek, CEO of Fakro; Jan Łuczak, CEO of Dolno¶l±skie Surowce Skalne Sp. z o.o.; and Andrzej Sołdek, chairman of Powszechne Towarzystwo Emerytalne PZU SA.

Among the winners was the Voice's business editor Andrzej Ratajczyk, who was singled out for praise for his "honest reporting for foreigners on Poland's economic situation during the last 20 years of political and economic transition."

Other prize-winning journalists included: Roman Młodkowski and Beata Ch±dzyńska from TVN CNBC Biznes; Małgorzata Dragan from the Polish Press Agency; Tomasz Pietryga from Rzeczpospolita daily; and Maciej Głogowski from radio station TOK FM.

The gala was held at the Fabryka Trzciny arts center in Warsaw and marked the Polish Chamber of Commerce's 20 years on the market.
