Polish Violinist in YouTube Orchestra
March 18, 2009
Article's tools:

Polish violinist Pawe³ Czarny has been picked for the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, the first ensemble in the world to select its members through online auditions.

The YouTube website invited both professional and amateur musicians from around the world to take part in the YouTube Symphony Orchestra project. Candidates needed only to upload video recordings of their renditions of a musical work written specially for the competition by Chinese composer Tan Duna. After the project was announced last December, the YouTube Symphony Orchestra channel at www.youtube.com/symphony was visited by over 13 million users from more than 200 countries. Over 3,000 videos were submitted for the competition from around the world.

Musicians for the orchestra were selected in two stages. A jury of professional symphony musicians whittled down the entrants to 200, after which the winners were picked by internet users in an online vote. The final lineup of the orchestra, announced March 3, consists of 90 musicians from 30 countries who play 26 different instruments. The winners of the YouTube competition will travel to New York City April 12 to take part in the YouTube Orchestra "summit" and then play a concert April 15 at Carnegie Hall, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas.
