Solaris Bus & Coach continued its reign in 2008 as Poland's top bus maker, selling a total of 1,037 vehicles. The firm sold 480 buses in Poland, the highest domestic sales figure in its history, while export sales of 557 buses also set a new record. Solaris sales rose 47 percent in 2008, or by 335 vehicles, compared with the previous year. "This year we are aiming even higher and reckon that we can sell some 1,200 vehicles to our customers," said Krzysztof Olszewski, chairman of Solaris supervisory board. "Already, knowing our production plan for coming months, I can confirm that this is an ambitious goal but also a realistic one. "The sale of 480 buses domestically gave Solaris a 30-percent share of the Polish bus market. In the municipal bus segment, Solaris outpaced its competitors even more, gaining a 53-percent market share. As far as exports are concerned, the United Arab Emirates purchased the greatest number of Solaris vehicles, thanks to a contract with Dubai for 225 buses. Next was Germany, where customers purchased a total of 185 Solaris Urbinos. Solaris was the biggest foreign supplier of municipal buses in Germany again in 2008, with a 9-percent market share. Moreover, last year brought the firm its largest export order to date: 320 buses for E.THE.L in Athens, Greece. Last year Solaris Bus & Coach income totaled zl.1.06 billion, an increase of zl.341 million over 2007.
