Toruń Economic Forum

This year's 16th Economic Forum in Toruń April 20-21 will be titled Poland: Five Years in the European Union, 20 Years After the Round Table Talks. Polish EU commissioner Danuta Hübner will make an introductory speech.

The first part of the forum will feature speakers including Sławomir Hinc, vice-president of Polish oil and gas extraction company PGNiG SA; Marek Sawicki, minister of agriculture and rural development; Andrzej Arendarski, head of the Polish Chamber of Commerce (KIG); and Józef Oleksy, prime minister of Poland 1995-1996 and speaker of the lower house of parliament 1993-1995 and 2004-2005.

The second part of the opening session will be devoted to the 20th anniversary of the Round Table talks between Poland's former communist government and the democratic opposition. The moderator of the discussion will be Prof. Michał Kulesza, one of the architects of Poland's local government reform. Andrzej Jonas, editor-in-chief of The Warsaw Voice, will act as a commentator during this part of the talks.

The third part of the opening session will begin at 5 p.m. It will be dedicated to the state of Poland's and Ukraine's preparations for the Euro 2012 European soccer championships. The discussion will deal with topics such as projects related to Euro 2012 and the event's impact on the Polish economy.

The second day of the forum will feature seminars, workshops and industry-specific debates.
