More than 2,500 politicians, economists and entrepreneurs will come to the southern Polish city of Katowice April 15-17 to debate the state of the global economy during an event entitled the European Economic congress.

Speakers will include Leszek Balcerowicz, a former deputy prime minister and three-time finance minister of Poland, and Mikulas Dzurinda, former prime minister of Slovakia.

"As the central point of one of the most industrialized regions in this part of Europe, Katowice is a perfect place to hold an event of such significance for the future of Europe," said Jerzy Buzek, a former prime minister of Poland, now a member of the European Parliament and chairman of the event's organizing committee.

Topics to be discussed in Katowice include the global financial crisis, the energy policy of the European Union, the directions of the EU's development, the diversity of EU regions, and technology transfer. Aside from purely industry-related subjects, the congress will discuss issues such as education, information society, and healthcare systems.

The organizers of the event are the authorities of Silesia province, the Upper Silesia Metropolitan Union, and the City of Katowice. Partners include the City of Gliwice. The media partners of the event are TVN24, TVN CNBC, Gazeta Prawna, Polska The Times, Polska Dziennik Zachodni, Nowy Przemysł, The Warsaw Voice, Rynek Spożywczy, Rynek Zdrowia, the Interfax press agency, Thomson Reuters, and the websites forsal.pl, bankier.pl, wnp.pl, rynekzdrowia.pl and portalspozywczy.pl.
