Around 500 exhibitors from 31 countries are set to take part in the 54th Warsaw International Book Fair, the largest event of its kind in this part of Europe, starting May 21.

Alongside stands with books, visitors can take in several photographic exhibitions, including black-and-white pictures by Zbigniew Bauman, an internationally known sociologist, philosopher and essayist. The exhibition is being organized by the Wydawnictwa Akademickie i Profesjonalne publishing house. The photographs have never been displayed in Poland before.

As each year, the International Book Fair will see the announcement of 20 nominations for Poland's NIKE Literary Award-on May 21 at 1 p.m. in the Mickiewicza Hall of the Palace of Culture and Science. Established in 1997, the NIKE is a prestigious award handed out annually for the best Polish book of the year.

The book fair will also see the winners of the 49th Competition of the Polish Association of Book Publishers for the Most Beautiful Books of 2008 announced. The awards ceremony will take place at noon May 22 in Mickiewicza Hall. A total of 89 publishing houses have submitted 165 titles for the competition.

The Warsaw International Book Fair is organized by Ars Polona, a leading importer of foreign publications.
