The Transformations Festival of Art on the Vistula is kicking off in Warsaw June 2. It was set up by Fundacja Nowej Kultury, a nonprofit organization aiming to bring culture closer to young people.

The festival is one of three new festivals organized in the city this year with the aim of promoting Warsaw as a contender for European Capital of Culture 2016. The Capital of Culture is a city designated by the European Union for one year during which it is given a chance to showcase its cultural life.

Other cities vying for Capital of Culture title include ŁódĽ, Gdańsk, Poznań and Toruń, and the Spanish cities Saragossa, San Sebastian, Burgos and Cordoba.

The Transformations festival will showcase 12 projects inspired by summer on the Vistula. They include the Wisłostrada Festival of Open Art June 19-21, the River of Culture project promoting Warsaw and its culture, and the TransForm project including cultural events on the river.

Attractions planned as part of these projects for city residents and visitors include trips by wooden barges from Solec Street down the river to the Bielany district and a series of concerts by Warsaw bands.

The festival will last four months, from June through September.
