Fakro is one of Poland's most innovative companies and one of the fastest developing manufacturers of roof windows worldwide. Today Fakro is number two in the world in terms of the number of roof windows sold, accounting for 15 percent of the global market.

The private company, wholly based on Polish capital, was established in 1991. Fakro windows are sold in 40 countries across the world. "The company's beginnings date back to my childhood," says Ryszard Florek, chairman of Fakro. "Whenever we had guests in our home in Tymbark [southern Poland], the children were put up for the night in the attic. Light was coming in there through glazed roofing tiles. I came up with the idea to replace them with roof windows. A few years later, in1976, when I was a student at the University of Technology in Cracow, I went for a training program to Germany and I saw that roof windows made perfect sense and were used in practice. I decided that I would deal with this business in the future. After I graduated and worked for two years at the university, together with Jacek Radkowiak, my colleague from the Cracow University of Technology sports club, we started a business in Tymbark in mid-1980s called Zakład Stolarki Budowlanej Florad. Back then, it was the largest and most modern private firm. At Florad, we made wooden paneling, flooring, built-in wardrobes and entrance doors for historical buildings. We reinvested all the money in the further development and expansion of the plant and new machines. In 1991, together with Krystyna Florek and Krzysztof Kronenberger, we established the Fakro company to launch production of roof windows."

Today the Fakro group has a work force of over 3,000 and 15 subsidiaries abroad. Fakro offers a wide range of roof window designs, including center pivot windows, hung and pivot windows, top hung windows, L-shaped windows, smoke ventilation windows, and access roof lights and skylights. Fakro also offers a wide range of roof window accessories and many more products to make living space in the attic more comfortable. Fakro products are safe, modern and feature top quality design and technology.

Fakro's windows are the world's only such windows certified by the TÜV

German association for technical inspection (Technischer Überwachungsverein). Fakro has developed and owns many patent-protected innovations. Fakro's modern research and development center employs nearly 40 designers.

Fakro aims to mark out new directions for the development of the roof window business around the world. The firm is one of the three most innovative companies in Poland.

"We focus on quality, innovation and development," says Florek. "Fakro is a Polish global firm that competes with other international players. For me and other members of the company's management board, the top priority is to strengthen Fakro's position as No. 2 in the world so as to make sure the firm continues to prosper in the long run. Thanks to our presence on 40 international markets, we help raise the profile of the Polish economy in the world. We want Fakro, our region and Poland to offer new opportunities for employees."
