P這ck: City of the Future
June 3, 2009
Article's tools:

Lying in the very heart of Mazovia, P這ck has one of the most beautiful locations of all the towns on the Vistula River. Established on a 50-meter escarpment not far from the forests and lakes of the Gostynin Lake District, centuries ago the city was the seat of Polish rulers.

Historical and cultural charm
Full of charm and historical curiosities, P這ck boasts many historic sites well worth seeing. Among them is the 12th-century Cathedral Basilica, converted by Italian master craftsmen during the Renaissance, which houses a sarcophagus with the remains of two Polish rulers: W豉dys豉w Herman and his son Boles豉w Krzywousty (the Wry-mouthed). The former Benedictine abbey close by is home to the Diocese Museum with a rich collection of religious art. P這ck also boasts Poland's oldest secondary school, the Ma豉chowianka, while the P這ck Scientific Society has a collection that includes valuable manuscripts, old prints and maps.

Tourists are drawn to P這ck also because of the Mazovian Museum located in a renovated Art Nouveau tenement house, and the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy where St. Faustyna experienced her first revelation from the Merciful Jesus. The charming Old Market Square is a landmark of the city, surrounded as it is by historical tenements and the classical Town Hall from whose tower a trumpeter plays a bugle call every day, following an old tradition. Other attractions for visitors include the beautiful Zoological Garden and an extensive range of cultural events. From the spring to the fall, the stage in the Old Market Square resounds with music, and concerts and fairs are held here almost every weekend. It's well worth visiting the new amphitheater, one of the largest and most modern in the country, seating 3,500 people under a fan-shaped roof. This venue opened last August with the finals of the Miss Poland contest. Music lovers should visit the cathedral, where regular festivals showcase organ music and Medieval single-voice music, and the beach, where electronic music and reggae is played in the vacation season. P這ck is a city of festivals as well as many other attractions for visitors that would take a long time to list.

Investment potential
The industrial side of P這ck also deserves mentioning. The Orlen oil company is based here; this giant of the liquid fuel and petrochemical market is one of the biggest companies in Central Europe. P這ck is also home to a factory of the popular Levi Strauss denim clothing brand, leading global farming machinery manufacturer CNH, and well-known producer of polypropylene, polyethylene and advanced polyolefin technology Basell Orlen Polyolefins. Food processing and shipbuilding are other rapidly developing industries.

P這ck is a vibrant business center with great potential, both in industry and tourism. This city that welcomes visitors currently offers over 1,500 beds, 396 of them at hotels and 357 at pensions and guest rooms. The occupancy rate is estimated at 80 percent over the whole year. Increasing hotel facilities is one of the investment priorities in the area. An excellent location, extensive cultural opportunities and a focus on the tourist aspect of development make P這ck the perfect city for this type of investment.

Investors will also find it worthwhile to look into what's on offer at the P這ck Industry and Technology Park, a joint project by the City of P這ck and PKN Orlen SA. Reputed companies specializing in comprehensive industrial infrastructure design as well as companies implementing technologies and solutions for different industrial sectors and business support firms offering a broad range of services can be found in the vicinity of the park. The P這ck Industry and Technology Park (PPPT) occupies about 200 hectares, all of it covered by a binding local zoning plan. The investment areas are divided into eight zones with different profiles: office/services, services/manufacturing and manufacturing/industry. Almost 130 hectares of the land offered to investors is in the form of developed plots with access to central heating, water supply, sewerage and telecommunications networks. All the zones have convenient access, the public roads connecting the individual zones being supplemented by a network of asphalt roads within the park itself.

Another factor that makes the PPPT attractive to investors is a modern and widely available office and training/conference infrastructure. The park offers office space totaling more than 5,000 square meters and almost 1,200 sq m of training and conference space. Clients can commission the organization of conferences, seminars, general shareholders' meetings as well as integration meetings and special events. Companies that decide to invest here can expect broad support in the form of technical consulting as well as comprehensive assistance during investment project preparation and completion.

Ideas for investors
The city attaches great importance to development, with an eye not only to increasing its tourist attractiveness but also to making life easier and more comfortable for P這ck's residents. Planned and ongoing sports and recreation projects will expand the city's range of leisure activities and allow residents to develop their passion for sport.

Planned projects include the construction of a yacht marina for 300 yachts and a few ships. The location is on the Vistula River near the existing Morka yacht club. The plans provide for modern port facilities with hangars, workshops, fuel stations, a yachting store and bathrooms. A restaurant will be opened at the end of the breakwater and the nearby pathway along the Vistula will be given a new surface, green areas, benches and parking spaces.

The city also plans to build a sports and recreation complex including a martial arts hall and a complex of recreational and/or sports swimming pools. The land earmarked for the complex, which is wholly owned by the commune, lies in the vicinity of P馧nocny (Northern) Park, a school complex and a preschool. It is about half a kilometer from the Wis豉 shopping mall and the Auchan shopping center. In the local zoning plan for the Podolszyce P馧noc neighborhood, the area has been designated for sports and recreation in the form of indoor facilities (buildings) and outdoor equipment.

The city also plans to build a ski slope on the Vistula escarpment. Apart from the slope, this complex will include a toboggan run, catering outlets, hotels and parking spaces. Other facilities related to sports or retail trade and services are also possible. P這ck plans to expand its recreation facilities by building an Aquapark in a public-private partnership project. Other plans as part of this project include a parking garage on Sienkiewicza St., five stories high with 87 parking spaces. The underground and ground-floor space is earmarked for retail and service outlets, and the other three floors would house only parking spaces. An entertainment/sports hall is also planned. The building will be round, with a diameter of 90 m. Inside there will be a 50 m by 30 m arena and bleachers for over 5,500 spectators. A parking lot for 500 cars will be located next to the building.

P這ck, a city with a rich history, is not basking in the glory of things past, but is doing its best to move forward, seeking new and attractive projects, pushing through new ideas; its dynamism makes P這ck the perfect place for new initiatives.
