The Immigrant as Perpetual Outsider

Visitors to the Polish Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Art Biennial (June 7-Nov. 22) will be able to see Krzysztof Wodiczko's Guests, an installation exhibition on the subject of multiculturalism and the theme of strangers. The work depicts immigrants who remain eternal guests in the country in which they have settled.

Wodiczko created the project specially for the biennial and plans to transform the interior of the exhibition pavilion into a place for watching scenes through "windows" that will be projected onto the walls. Visitors will be able to see immigrants cleaning the windows, resting, talking about the hardships of life, their difficulties in finding a job and problems with their residence status.

The images projected are slightly blurred, in a reference to the unclear status of the immigrants and their invisibility in society.

The exhibition is organized by the Zachęta National Gallery of Art.
