Outstanding American theater director Robert Wilson has been asked by Maciej Zięba, director of the European Solidarity Center (ECS), to stage a special show in Gdańsk next year marking the 30th anniversary of the Solidarity trade union. The celebrations in Gdańsk, the cradle of the Solidarity movement, are scheduled for Aug. 31.

Wilson, 68, is a legendary artist who has won acclaim as an avant-garde director, unconventional choreographer, performer, painter, and sound and lighting designer. Wilson paid a visit to Gdańsk June 9 to discuss the project with Zięba and spent a day at Gdańsk's historic shipyard.
