Pride of Poland

The Janów Podlaski stud farm in the eastern province of Lublin is preparing to host the annual Pride of Poland Arabian horse auction combined with a national Arabian horse show Aug. 7-11.

Janów Podlaski is a mecca for international breeders and exhibitors of Arabian horses. Polish Arabians have long been highly valued across the world. In 1864, breeders from the Branicki family supplied 90 mares and two stallions to Turkish Sultan Abdul Aziz. Stallions Van Dyck and Ursus, sold to breeders from Spain at the beginning of the 20th century, made Polish Arabian horses famous internationally.

The annual auction of horses from Polish stud farms has been held at Janów Podlaski since 1970. Since 2001, the auction has been alternately known as Pride of Poland and Arabian Horse Days.

The auction comprises an open bidding and a "silent sale" procedure whereby bids are written on a sheet of paper. Every year the bidding is preceded by a Polish National Arabian Horse Show.

In 1977, total proceeds from the auction for the first time exceeded $1 million. In 1981, American businessman Armand Hammer paid $1 million for stallion El Paso. Last year, an anonymous bidder from the United Arab Emirates offered 1,125,000 euros for mare Kwestura, setting an all-time price record at Janów.
