Agnieszka Sicińska, a dentist and medical director of Cs Eurodental, talks to Ewa Hancock.

Are dental implants the next best thing to the third set of teeth that nature never gave us?
We can cheat nature with dental implants because, screwed into the bone, they weigh a similar amount to natural teeth. We owe dental implants to Swedish orthopedist Prof. Per Ingmar Brenemark, who in the mid-1960s used titanium tools to examine blood microcirculation in the bones of rabbits. After the tests were over, he was unable to remove the tools, because the bones had spontaneously healed and the tools had as if grown into the tissue. Brenemark thus discovered that titanium could integrate with bone tissue and did not corrode. It can stay in bones for years, which means that in the upper and lower jaws, it can become the ideal basis for ceramic tooth crowns.

Is there any risk of rejection?
Dental implants are made of titanium which is a biologically neutral material. They are not grafts. Obviously, no doctor in their right mind will tell you the procedure is always 100 percent successful. There is always a risk, but in this case, it is less than 10 percent.

In other words, are implants the best solution?
They are the most beneficial to our bodies. Dental implants in people with very serious diseases of the digestive system are extremely helpful in recovery. Removable dentures assure 30 percent chewing efficiency, while implants give 100 percent, which means food is finely chewed and, consequently, digested well.

Almost 90 percent of Polish people are missing some teeth. When teeth are missing, bridgework is required, but then the two adjacent teeth have to be reduced. It is a better idea to get a dental implant and fix a crown on it.

When you get dental implants:
1. Before the implantation procedure, you need to deal with caries and any inflammatory conditions in the oral cavity.
2. Oral hygiene must be extremely good before and after the procedure.
3. For around one week after the procedure, you should avoid physical effort, strenuous sports and hard and spicy foods.
4. Use the opportunity to quit smoking. Cigarette smoke radically slows down the healing process and may cause inflammatory conditions in the oral cavity.
