Struggling to plug a hole in its budget amid an economic slowdown that has hit revenues, the government has decided to speed up sales of assets in a string of companies in order to raise nearly zl.37 billion by the end of 2010.

Following the approval of a new fast-track privatization agenda Aug. 11, the government expects to earn more than zl.11 billion from privatization this year and more than zl.25 billion in 2010, according to Treasury Minister Aleksander Grad.

The Treasury Ministry is working on 450 privatization projects and expects to complete 19 big-ticket deals by the end of the year and follow up with a further 39 in 2010.

While pressing ahead with its privatization agenda, the government is determined to keep controlling stakes in four companies, KGHM Polska MiedĽ copper producer, Lotos fuel group, and the PGE and Tauron energy groups, Grad said.
