Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is more than just a slogan at the Ciech Chemical Group. It is part of Ciech's business philosophy, manifested through care for the natural environment, support for sports and culture, and the professional growth of the work force.

Looking after nature
Chemical companies are particularly responsible for the condition of the environment because they affect it in many ways. With that in mind, the Ciech Group is building an Integrated Ecology Management System. The system relies on a flow of information between the corporate center and the corporation's divisions and companies, all to build an ecological database of the group.

Information on how production plants affect the environment is the basic tool to assess the group's ecological status, monitor the magnitude of its impact on individual aspects of the environment, identify threats and take preventive and corrective steps. The Ciech Group uses waste packaging recovery and recycling systems, reclaims process waste sites and areas previously occupied by sewage retention tanks. Zachem, one of the Ciech Group companies, has its own Chemical Rescue Station. Ciech is also working to monitor and reduce its emissions of carbon dioxide.

Eco-friendly
Ciech has been carrying out numerous investment projects to meet ever stricter environmental protection requirements. These projects have resulted in the development of more efficient technological processes, lower emissions of pollutants, and better condition of areas surrounding Ciech's facilities. In addition to investment projects, the Ciech Group is working to raise its profile as a corporation that feels responsible for the environment. The Zachem and Organika-Sarzyna companies have for years taken part in the A Tree for a Bottle campaign, which is organized by companies involved in the Responsible Care program in conjunction with World Environmental Protection Day. In March, Organika-Sarzyna carried out an educational campaign among children in schools and preschools, providing them with information about the production of plastics and recycling of plastic waste. Ciech has also assumed honorary patronage of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Kampinos National Park, a unique natural monument in Poland and beyond.

Culture and sports
Ciech has been involved in a number of cultural projects this year, including the 13th Opera and Operetta Festival in Ciechocinek, the Chopin-the Heart of Poles publication, which marks the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth, and a coffee-table book accompanying The City of Phoenix exhibition about Warsaw.

The Ciech Group never forgets to support sports, and subsidiaries work with local sports clubs. This year, they have supported clubs including Unia Janikowo, Sportino Inowrocław, Unia in Nowa Sarzyna, KS Vitrosilicon in Iłowa, and MKS Alwernia.

Human touch
Modern companies are aware that their development largely depends on human resources. The Ciech Group conducts regular job satisfaction surveys, develops incentive systems and helps staff enhance their qualifications by, for example, offering MBA studies to the best managers and postgraduate studies in technology and chemical and process engineering to those who deal with production. Especially for young and talented workers, Ciech has developed a program called Talent Promotion and offers internships to university graduates. Concerned about the future of the chemical sector, Ciech sponsors Chemistry Olympics, a competition for high school students.

As part of its environmental protection efforts, Ciech is introducing waste recovery and recycling systems, and reclaims former waste sites and sewage retention tank sites.
