The European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union, have become one of the most important cultural events in Europe. This year in Poland, the European Heritage Days will be taking place Sept. 12-13 and 19-20 under the slogan "Save Historic Buildings! Fortifications, Castles and Strongholds Route." The opening ceremony will take place Sept. 12 in Kołobrzeg on the Baltic coast.

The European Heritage Days aim to spread knowledge of history and culture, and promote regional heritage. The event also seeks to remind Europeans about the common roots of European culture. Last year, European Heritage Days events in Poland were attended by over 350,000 people at more 1,200 cultural events.

As indicated by the slogan, this year's European Heritage Days in Poland focus on fortified architecture, military heritage and traces of wars and battles fought on Polish territories in the past.

Admission is free to historic buildings and other cultural venues such as indoor and outdoor museums, gardens and parks which are otherwise paid or closed to the public. Visitors to these places are in for numerous attractions such as concerts, exhibitions and art workshops.
