Virtuoso in Jewish Museum Concert
September 16, 2009
Article's tools:

Warsaw's National Opera is hosting world-famous violinist Joshua Bell in a concert Oct. 21 to benefit the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, which is now under construction in the Polish capital.

Bell is considered to be one of the greatest virtuosos of our day. He is a celebrity of the world of film music and classical music. His work can be heard in soundtracks to films such as The Red Violin, which won an Oscar for music in 2000, and Defiance.

In Warsaw, Bell will play Brahms on a unique Gibson ex Huberman Stradivarius violin dating back to 1713. This antique instrument, worth $4 million, once belonged to Polish Count Jan Zamoyski, who presented it to Bronisław Huberman, a young and talented violinist from Częstochowa, as a token of admiration for his performance in 1895. Later, Huberman set up the Palestine Symphony Orchestra and won international fame as a violin virtuoso.

The Warsaw concert is intended for people aiming to help raise funds for the museum's main exhibition.

"Art sponsorship is the oldest form of financing artists and patronage over works of art," said Prof. Jerzy Olędzki of the University of Warsaw. "If not for financial support from private sponsors and institutions, there would be no beautiful temples or masterpieces of painting and music today."

The names of those sponsoring the concert will be listed on a commemorative plaque inside the museum.
