The future of the legal services market was the focus of a conference that the National Chamber of Legal Advisors held at Warsaw's InterContinental Hotel Sept. 15.

The conference attracted Prof. Richard Susskind of Balliol College, University of Oxford, an adviser to the British justice minister and private corporations. Susskind is a strong advocate of the use of new technology in legal services, and the author of a book entitled The End of Lawyers? Well-known reporter Dorota Warakomska moderated the conference.

"It was a bold move for the National Chamber of Legal Advisers to organize the conference," said Dorota Hołubiec, a partner at Smart Communication Group. "Prof. Susskind's book, which was a fantastic read for me, is not complimentary to lawyers. I hope that more widespread use of new technology will contribute to better communication with the client. Today we all know that this communication is ailing. Some 65 percent of clients change law firms because of communication problems."

The panel discussion featured a diversity of opinion. Some experts said that Polish lawyers are ready to accept some of Susskind's ideas, though they disagreed with his argument that clients will increasingly require routine legal work to be standardized and even "commoditized," and that this will fundamentally challenge the business models underpinning most modern law firms.

At the end of the meeting, Maciej Bobrowicz, president of the National Chamber of Legal Advisers, handed out awards to law firms that have created the best websites.
