Strange Music
October 14, 2009
Article's tools:

The Appendix2 Gallery is showing a monumental work by the late Polish artist Stanis³aw Dró¿d¿ (1939-2009). The work, entitled Timespace/From To, was the artist's last project and a follow-up to pieces that he exhibited at the 50th Art Biennial in Venice in 2003.

From To consists of 80 charts 30 by 30 centimeters and filled with various combinations of words and letters in which Dró¿d¿ saw an extraordinary musical potential. He saw sequences of charts as a notation that waited to be translated into sounds. Music to this unusual libretto was written by Tadeusz Sudnik, an outstanding sound engineer and composer of experimental music. After months of work, From To became a form of contemporary opera for two voices.

Dró¿d¿ is considered to be one of the greatest writers of what is known as pattern poetry. He called his works "shape-ideas." Those were single words, digits and signs that Dró¿d¿ placed in two- and three-dimensional spaces.
