After its successful 2007 tour, the Alexandrov Ensemble is coming to Poland again. This time, the tour will take in 13 dates, including two at the Kongresowa Hall in Warsaw Oct. 27 and 31.

The Alexandrov Ensemble was formed in 1928 by Alexander Alexandrov, a famous Russian conductor and musician who composed the present Russian national anthem. After Alexandrov died in 1946, his son took over the ensemble. The ensemble's conductor is now Prof. R.I. Royevskiy.

The choir initially consisted of 12 performers, including eight singers and four instrumentalists who mainly performed for soldiers. In the mid-1930s the ensemble grew considerably, becoming a large male-voice choir with an orchestra and dance ensemble. In 1937, it performed abroad for the first time, performing at the World Exposition in Paris. The ensemble proved a hit and won the Grand Prix.

The Alexandrov Ensemble today is almost 200-strong, including choir singers, an orchestra and dancers. They perform a repertoire of over 2,000 songs, from soldier's songs to folk and religious songs, works by Russian and international composers and even pop hits. The Alexandrov Ensemble has collaborated with France's Didier Marouani to record the electronic Space Opera. It has also collaborated with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd fame, who invited the Alexandrov Ensemble to appear in his famous The Wall Live in Berlin event.

The Alexandrov Ensemble choir has also toured with the Leningrad Cowboys band, making history with the Total Balalaika Show. During the concerts, the choir and soloists sang hits such as "Yellow Submarine," "Stairway to Heaven" and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door."
