Poland took the bronze at the Women's European Volleyball Championships in £ód¼, central Poland, Oct. 4.

In a match for third place, the Polish players beat Germany 3-0.

During the tournament, Poland lost two matches, both to the Netherlands. The Dutch team defeated the Polish players in the qualifying round and then in the semifinals. The Polish team knocked out the Russians, which had to return home without a European championship medal for the first time in years.

In the final, Italy beat the Netherlands 3-0.

The bronze is the third European tournament medal for the Polish women's volleyball team over the past six years. In 2003 and 2005, they won the European championships. The last time they won a bronze at the European championships was in 1971.

The success of the Polish women's volleyball players comes after an unexpected victory of the men's team at the European championships in Izmir, Turkey, Sept. 13.
