American diva Cassandra Wilson, one of the biggest names on this year's Era Jazzu series of concerts, will be performing at the Hilton Hotel in Warsaw Nov. 3.

As well as being one of the most sought-after jazz vocalists in the world today, Wilson is a classically trained pianist and clarinetist and a self-taught guitarist. As a child, she was exposed to jazz through her father, who also played the guitar, and to soul through her mother, who was into the Motown sound. Wilson turned professional in 1975, aged 20, mostly singing blues and folk material. She owes her arrival on the jazz scene to percussionist Alvin Fielder, who encouraged her to sing bebop. Wilson released her debut album Point of View in 1985 and her breakthrough came in 1993 when she signed with the legendary Blue Note label.

Wilson has an output of 20 solo albums. Her New Moon Daughter (1996) won her a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance and Loverly (2009) was awarded a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Her latest album Closer to You: The Pop Side consists of jazz versions of songs by Cyndi Lauper, U2, Bob Dylan, Sting, Van Morrison, Neil Young and others. Cassandra Wilson may be inextricably associated with jazz, but she loves to experiment and to enrich the jazz oeuvre with other genres, like blues, pop and country. Maybe that's why her music never gets stuck in a groove.
