Alice in Chains are coming to town for a gig at the Stodoła club in Warsaw Nov. 25. The American grungemeisters are ranked alongside Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Nirvana.

Alice in Chains was formed by lead singer Lane Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell in Seattle in 1987. The two recruited bass player Mike Starr and drummer Sean Kinney. The band released their first album, Facelift, in 1990.

The band's second studio album, Dirt (1992) made them hugely popular. The album had more of a heavy metal than grunge feel about it with its heavy, gloomy and downright depressing sound and the instrumentalists accentuating Staley's unearthly lyrics.

Unfortunately, the band's drug problems, which had been all too painfully visible from the outset, were destined to take a heavy toll. The first casualty was Starr, who jumped ship in 1993. He was replaced by former Ozzy Osbourne bassist Mike Inez.

Alice in Chains, the last studio album Staley recorded with the group, came out in 1995. The concert they gave on MTV Unplugged was one of the last occasions on which Staley was heard performing live. The police found Staley's body April 19, 2002. The singer had fatally overdosed on a cocktail of morphine, codeine and cocaine some two weeks previously.

The band put themselves on hold for several years after the singer's death. They were reactivated in 2005 with William DuVall on vocals. The present concert tour is to promote the band's latest album, Black Gives Way to Blue. The album only came out in September and is the first to feature the new lineup.
