Band to Gossip About
November 18, 2009
Article's tools:

"We were raised in Arkansas by women, wolves and cassettes" and "We are feminists, artists, disc jockeys and writers," is how Gossip describe themselves on their official website. The American indie rock outfit will be appearing at the Palladium in Warsaw Nov. 21.

Gossip comprises guitarist/bass player Nathan Howdeshell, drummer Hannah Blilie and singer Beth Ditto. The group has been around since 1999, give or take a change or two in lineup, but mainstream success eluded them until they released the album Standing in the Way of Control in 2006.

Gossip's music is a mixture of indie rock and punk with a touch of dance thrown in. Add to this Beth Ditto, whose powerful voice brings Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner to mind with its gospel overtones and you start to get the idea. And you can listen to all sorts of gossip about the lead singer of Gossip when you are not listening to her. Journalists love commenting on her latest outfits and never tire of quoting what she has to say about her body or her sexuality.

The Palladium gig is part of a concert tour to promote the album Music for Men which came out in June this year, produced by the legendary Rick Rubin.

The Palladium concert will be Gossip's second Polish appearance this year. The first was at the Heineken Open'er Festival in Gdynia in July. The verdict? Beth Ditto is an energy bomb who explodes on stage.
